Just because you buy a bag of commercial doesn't mean you have to serve it as is. There are a lot of easy additions you can mix into commercial food with little effort. Commercial foods often say they contain antioxidants, but it's usually Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Selenium they are including to meet other requirements.
Here's a spice mixture that adds a variety of antioxidants to your dog's bowl to help with inflammation and general health. It's a modest amount for a large bag of 25+ pounds, you could even double it, but start out small to see how your dog tolerates these additions. Use any or all.
- 1 tablespoon cumin - regulates blood sugar, fights cancer
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon - inflammation and heart health
- 1 tablespoon ground ginger - inflammation, fights cancer, digestive issues
- 1 tablespoon turmeric - fights cancer, relieves nausea, inflammation
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper - empowers turmeric
- 1/4 cup dried mint - antimicrobial, fights cancer, heart health, digestion
- 1/4 cup dried parsley - fights cancer, freshens breath
Mix spices well in a small bowl. Sprinkle into the bag of commercial food then seal the bag and go to town on shaking it up and distributing the spices. Just when you think you're done, shake it for a couple more minutes.
Other additions you could include are:
- 1-2 cups dried cranberries
- 1-2 cups dried banana chips
- 1-2 cups dried apple chips
- 1/2 cup dried seaweed, crumbled
